Interior Lime Plaster Brands

hello, I'm looking for a bit of advice on lime plaster brands, or perhaps 'lime' plaster brands in the case of some of them.

My situation is that I have old solid walls that have had gypsum on for a good long while, with some damp issues of course, that I'm looking at taking back to brick, letting dry for a while then replastering with truly breathable materials.

I'm willing to pay for the convenience of pre-mixed base and top coats, to that end there seem to be a few options that I wondered if anyone had opinions on, as reviews and actual factual information on some of this stuff seems few and far between.

so there's
-lime|green products, base and top coat pre mixxes : this stuff seems pretty genuine from what I can tell, no mention of cement anywhere in it

VPI renders/ plaster : this stuff claims to be breathable but I can't for the life of me find any reviews/ recommendations for it online, some of the mixes mention both lime and cement in the same bag, would the cement not hinder the lime in terms of breathability? also mentions silicone, is silicone breathable? I genuinely have no idea.

Limelite renovation plasters: another product that looks great and easy on the surface but then seems to contain stuff in the mix that is counter intuitive to the point of lime being breathable


The lime|green stuff seems like a pretty good if probably expensive option, does anyone have any advice on these at all, or any other product recommendations? I would appreciate anything, I'm not much of a plasterer at all and trying to decipher this stuff when most info is regarding gypsum plaster is a headache!

Just to throw in another option for you - Fibrechalk from Anglia Lime. I've not used it myself, but if you are buying in ready-mixed, they are pretty local to you being in Sudbury.

Oh, and if you are going back to bare brick, it is worth putting some insulation up on the walls (cork or woodfibre for breathability). You'd need 100-150mm to hit current building regulation requirements, but even 50mm will make a big difference.

Doing it 'properly' with putty based products is also worth investigating, they're available pre-mixed and although they need some care to apply are more forgiving than their reputation suggests. If you're looking to add insulation then I like what I've seen of woodfibre boards with NHL based plasters on top.

I did the walls and ceilings of my house in lime plaster in 2010-11, using Mike Wye products, namely haired 3/1 for the scratch coat, unhaired 3/1 for the float coat and Regency for a nice finish on top. I opted for the 10 litre tubs (45 on a pallet) in order to take one variable out of the problem, but if you are brave you can just buy the putty from them and the sand locally, and mix it yourself. I did have one delivery of a huge bag of the 3/1 but it was horrible to mess around with so I didn't do that again. If you buy the haired you need to use it fairly soon as the lime makes the hair rot away.

One of the best investments I made was to buy my own cement mixer, and I wish I had adopted the same strategy for all tools - buy the best you can afford, use it and look after it.
