Ah yes Loudons book. I had call to use it a few years ago when I did an MA thesis on corrugated iron farm buildings. Although then I had to consult a copy at the British Library reading room at Boston Spa. Im hoping to carry on some more work on corrugated iron so thanks for posting up its available on-line. To let you know where my slightly anorakey interest now lies. Im interested in regional or local styles of corrugated iron farm buildings;different shapes colours and detailing. So has anyone noticed any particular styles in their area?

Well I work as a building conservation archaeologist so I am always thinking about the built environment around us and how there is value in stuff that is often overlooked or dismissed. (I once worked on a project assessing the significance of cold war buildings – loads of concrete structures with little aesthetic value but loads of historic). Anyway a few years ago I started to notice the use of corrugated iron, not just farm buildings or tin chapels and village halls but used as an easy way to repair stuff or patch up hedges or home made buildings. Just look at a good municipal allotment. A bit more research and I realised that corrugated iron has a long and very significant history the 19th century eg. for development of trade (it allowed covering large spaces for the storage of bulk goods), expansion in the colonies (eg. the Manning colonial cottage – a flat pack house for emigrants to Australia) and the saving of British farming during the agricultural depression of the 1870s when it enabled farmers to avoid costly building repairs and allowed for the expansion of dairying – liquid milk being one of the few commodities that wasn’t imported. I could go on. But the upshot is when I took a course in Building Conservation recently corrugated iron was an obvious choice to investigate further. Versatile, flexible and at times aesthetically pleasing. I mentioned in a previous post we are wanting to roof our cottage with corrugated - as much because I am championing the material and would like to see it accepted more as a traditional material.
And yes your chicken house is of interest.

It could be worse - remember Randy Bumgardener from Have I Got News for You? I think he's actually Baumgardener. He works at the White House if I remember rightly. Imagine if his parents had decided to move to the UK.....

Corrugated iron - hmm, not my thing, but then as I prefer Victorian industrial buildings any day to stately homes, those in glass houses should not throw stones!

Do a Google search on "Tilstock Airfield" or "Prees Heath Airfield" (it's the same place :roll: ) - lots of corrugated iron "Nissen huts" just off the main road there, all returning to nature as the wood gradually takes over again. All freely accessible as well. Obviously military rather than farming, but I guess lots of Nissen huts must have ended up as farm buildings when the war was over.

We spotted this abandoned, crumbling water mill on the River Avon, near Bradford-on-Avon, about three years ago. I've no idea whether the corrugated iron was put on in a vain attempt to conserve the building, or whether it was thus clad when it was still a working mill. Judging by the look of the windows I suspect the latter.

I wonder whether it has been rescued in the last three years, or has continued to detriorate.

Difficult to know. The roof timbers have obviously collapsed in places, but perhaps this was because of displaced tiles allowing rain to get in.

Gareth - many thanks for that update. I'm thrilled to see that it is being renovated. The lack of listing may be a worry, in terms of the quality of the renovation, but frankly any rescue of the building has to be better than none at all.

I wonder whether it will become exclusive executive waterside apartments, and the waterwheel rebuilt is a bijou feature.
