A couple of times in this video (best seen at 8.20 in) the guy uses a reversible device in his drill, with his drill-bit on one end and a screw-bit on the other. Anyone seen/used one of these? Having spent the weekend changing between drill-bit for pilot hole and screw-bit for driving in the screw, (with inevitable hunt for chuck-key in between), it looks a nifty bit of kit. Of course the answer would be to get a new battery for my second drill, or a new drill, but it looks interesting,

A handy tool indeed, they are called flip drivers, I bought a Makita set on ebay for around £15 posted. It's one of those tools, that once you buy one, you wonder how you managed without it!

Just out of interest I am told that the drill bits in the cheaper sets tend to blunt very quickly.

I have very fond memories of the wood workshop in our local art school. It was so easy when one could have one drill for making pilot holes, another for driving home the screws, and a third with a countersink bit, all conveniently to hand and all with batteries fully charged (by someone else).
After that experience, diy at home lost a lot of its attraction.

I'm with eezageeza! I almost never pilot-drill before screwing softwood components together. I find the self-drill screws a brilliant time-saver. The only exception to this is if I'm screwing very thin boards to something - these can split easily and so are worth pilot-drilling.
