Insulation on inside of a solid 215mm wall.

Im at the stage off renewing the interior arcitrave,skirting,plaster,wiring on my old cottage/barn. The previous owner some 13 years ago had damp proof injected into the walls and re-plastered upto a metre, this is off a pink finishing plaster and greyish- white plaster beneath, is this lime ? how do you tell the differance ?
There is about 5 % of the building which is showing damp.
The solid 215mm red brick wall is off lime mortar.
I would like to have some internal insulation, ive been told to remove all plaster, paint `kingfisher` SBR on walls, install 25mm insulation between battons, plastic sheet and then plasterboard ?
Or should I leave the walls as they are and just deal with the 5 % damp ?
sorry for lots of questions , but any advice will be great.

Have a look at following for ideas, I have just done the same but on a 1965 timber extension, all it was was 100mm studs with expanded metal lath and render, 1 inch of very itchy fibreglass and plaster board - it was very very cold in winter and very hot in summer. I know have gone the Celotex in between studs and a 25mm board over the whole lot also taped jointed with silver tape and then plaster boardfixed with longer screws into the 100mm studs. It is amazing the diffrence and hardly need heating on in kitchen now and as I have improved underfloor ventilation and then insulation between joists it is much nicer and less damp.

What is Kingfisher SBR.. if it's what I think don't touch it...

Kingfisher chemicals do a product call SBR. Any more info on this.

We have excavated a corner of our sitting room recently and got back to the original stone and mud walls of our 1807 cottage where we can clearly see the damp in the walls. We had a plasterer around who recommended using SBR on the walls. We put his suggestions to our surveyor who did not recommend using SBR. I also posted a question on this forum and got a similar response as the one we got from the surveyor.

The problem with putting insulation on the interior walls of a period building is that in so many cases you end up with a bland and flat and featureless interior, with sharp angles everywhere, and many who own period properties really don't want this.

So it's worth considering if you are prepared for that.

But don't do anything not reversible and don't paint the walls with anything supposed to stop damp.

Ensure instead that your building is pointed properly with lime mortar, and that all guttering etc is sound.

I very much doubt that any plaster connected with a damp proofing attempt is lime.

I visited the new `NATIONAL SELF BUILD & RENOVATION CENTRE` in Swindon at the weekend.

Very good worth a visit.

They have a full size mock of a old dilapidated house with a audio tour, step by step on renovating.

Although it had a small cavity wall they repointed it in lime and put up 50mm insulation on inside, plasterboard & skim.
