Hi there
I am looking for some advice on insulation. I own a c.400 year old house (not listed). Over the last year we have undertaken some quite substantial repairs, specifically having to replace rotten sole plates all around the base of the house, rebuilding brick plinths, and ripping up and replacing the offending concrete floor that led to the damp that created the rot.
One other issue is that the exterior of the house has been rendered using concrete. Whilst this is not causing an issue at the moment, both a specialised surveyor and the local council (inc. the conservation officer who we involved due to the age of the house) have agreed that it should be removed and be replaced; in this case we have permission for weatherboarding.
I want to take the opportunity to improve the insulation when doing this work. The plan is to have the boarding mounted on battens, with a breathable membrane. My question is what insulation is best to use in the cavity? I know that wool is always an option that is mentioned, but I've also been told that more modern 'rockwool' type insulation is also ok (and more cost effective). What I want to avoid is using a product that is going to cauuse issues with breathability in the future.
Any advice or views are more than welcome. Thanks in advance for any help.
