I would be so grateful if anyone could please advise me. We have bought a very neglected old house. It was built in 1822 but has had some tinkering in the Edwardian period or later… hasn’t been maintained very well recently and last had money spent on it about 50 years ago…
The staircase in our house has cellar steps running down behind it. The cellar is cold of course and the wooden casing to the stairs (where in a house with no cellar you would have a cupboard under the stairs) has a lot of signs of condensation / mould on the paint work. The house hasn’t been decorated for many many years and there are lots of signs of condensation but in this place it’s quite severe. I think the warm air hits the wooden panelling and condenses on the cold wood.
Can I put some Insulation board behind it to reduced the coldness and to help keep the house warmer? If so, what insulation material would be recommended? the cellar floods in winter so it needs to not mind that… I’ve no experience of insulating but will be doing it myself. I am slowly decorating the house and would like to prevent the decoration getting wrecked if I can.
Thank you!
