Renovating a 100 year old red brick. We’ve decided to remove window architraves in the bedrooms to allow us to install wood fibre board. There was no insulation behind the wooden architraves and panelling, just brick, and the panelling itself didn’t appear to be original. In our living rooms, we’ve opted not to install woodfibre board in order to maintain the original coving and other features. My dilemma now is whether or not to remove the window surrounds in these two rooms to plaster these sections . Unlike the bedrooms, the surrounds are more ornate and appear to be original. We have to remove a section from around each window to allow for the installation of the new (deeper) windows, but I’m reticent to take them all off. they fill the expanse of the bay window area. Is there a way to insulate behind the surrounds once the small sections are removed without having to remove them in their entirety? Maybe a blown in insulation? Again, it’s just single brick behind these panels. I’d imagine if we do nothing, we’ll lose a lot of heat out through the wall.
