The 18C part of my stone and thatch cottage is cosy and warm with only slight damp. The 1980s extension is decidedly chilly. It is built with stone rubble outer skin, uninsulated cavity and concrete block inner. The roof is thatch but is ventilated under the thatch. I've put insulation over the flat part of the ceiling but the hazel spars stick too far down to slide insulation into the slope. In the old roof the thatch has filled all of this space and no doubt if I wait a century or so the new bit will as well. Should I use loose fill insulation or will I have condensation problems if I fill the gap? Can you ues cavity wall insulation in an uneven stone and concrete wall? There is some wiring in the cavity: will any injected insulation damage the cable or only some types? Or should I just stick an extra log on the woodburner and not worry about it?
