Hi guys (and gals),
I thought you might like to take a look at our fireplace. My Dad has been working hard for the last few weeks on it.
Between us we've taken quite a few photos of the work in progress.

Looks like you are having fun. Question is, is John Innes Compost No. 2 a standard period property material for fixing fireplaces that I don't know about? (picture number 5) :wink:

What a great Dad you've got!
I really envy you your latest find, the bread oven, all we have found are some clinker blocks.
May I ask how you managed to get the old documents sent to you? All I've found is an 1889 map.

We got all of our docs from our solicitor, in the old days they would have been held by the mortgage company or the land registry as proof of ownership. That system went electronic a few years ago so now, when people move house, the documents get passed on to the owner.

I had to remind the solicitor (twice) that we really wanted these documents and one day they just turned up in the post

To have any hope of finding yours you'll need to talk to you solicitor and those of the previous owner and speak to them as well. If the house has changed hands a few times recently you may have trouble finding them.

Our solicitor gave us all he had which wasn't anything of particular interest. The property had been with the same family for at least 3 generations possible more & had to be registered when we bought it.
I could ask the mortgage company if they have anything but when I inquired about the deeds for my previous home I was told they are not kept anymore which I think is a great pity.

Unbelievable, you've ruined that lovely 1980's gas fire - I hope you're planning to refit it and make it a feature of the newly opened space, maybe with some stone cladding applied to the walls around it.

Whilst you're at it I'd get rid of that horrible iron oven door as well.
