Inglenook beam

Hello again all. Much upheaval since my last post. Life just takes over sometimes! We had to move closer to an aged parent, so sadly sold the old school we were renovating… unable to resist the lure of renovating we’ve bought an old Welsh cottage. It’s been in the same family since the 1970s and is in need of much love, to say nothing of a new roof.

Photo attached- does anyone know what these painted symbols on the inglenook beam might mean?…. If anything They were in pace when the previous family bought the house in 1972.

Any views on whether they should stay or go?

No contest. leave em alone. If they're been there for 50+years they are part of the buildings story.

Also, given how much discolouration of the surrounding timber may have occurred since they were first painted then silhouettes of the images would remain after the paint is removed. I suspect you would have to media blast the timber to get rid of them permanently.

the fireplace looks amazing, they look great, not period, but I would leave and polish up the rest.
