I have just completed restoration of my daughter's 16thC timber frame cottage. She has " trumped " me with a stupid ( must be..I don't know the answer) question.
Q:- " can I seal the stones of my fire hearth with a clear sealant "
A: " (from me)... NO, the heat will melt, evaporise the sealant and everything could go " bang".
Is there a clear stone sealer that will not result in firework displays when subjected to radiant heat from a log fire ?.
( my answer to such a question in the past has always been sidestepped by reccommending that natural " untempered with" stone surfaces look more natural, especially in the sooted area in the vicinity of a chimney). Well. I am right !!!!!!!.
Nevertheless, I bet that one or two of you knows something that I don't.
So, help is reqquired to put my ( fussy!!!) daughter out of her misery.
