in situ cornice

Hello

I'm thinking of having a go at running a cornice in situ. I've been looking in the archive here, & on the web for info aswell. Hve just read that in the old old days the apprentiship for this area of work took 7 years. hmmm.

Anyway just posting this beacause I thought the following 2 sites make interesting viewing. The video in particular makes it look so easy. & the other site contains loads of great photos once you start exploring, however some of the work here looks anything but easy...

Have never done it, don't know how difficult it is, however, I would be tempted to have a go as if it all goes terribly wrong you just need to remove it all before it dries and then have another attempt. If you give up you can just revert to plan B.

I was most impressed that the whole job seemed to be in the hands of a young lady plastereress but the illusion was spoiled when the older codger turned up. What was she saying to him at the end when having a go at the corner?

I've made moulds and cast ornament for cornices
I've mended short straight sections using mitre rules
I've repaired a length of partly broken cornice running with a hand-held template
but I've never run a complete cornice.

This was the project too far:

The part carved master for a ceiling rose. Five of these were to have been cast in plaster and set in a circle, with some further detail in the centre. Two such roses were to be made for my living room, but the indoors couldn't face another year before it was finished.

Am I being retarded or is there no mention of the correct mix for running a cornice?

I know the way this works is that the putty lime is mixed with casting plaster, although I am unsure of proportions. If it is to lean of casting plaster I am told that it can crack. It is the casting plaster which causes it to swell and each successive pass the former scrapes of a bit more harder plaster from the top. 20 minutes is a time I have been told for working time.

With the correct mix and running tool it should be a relatively simple task to achieve, cutting in the corner would be the most difficult.
