Impartial Damp Advice

Hi, I realise this is probably a frequently asked question, but we're in the process of buying a mid Victorian ground floor flat. It's had a quote from a damp specialist, who would use a chemical solution. We have read conflicting reports about this process. What we are after is independant specialist advice, from someone who's not trying to sell us a product. We're in North London and would rather use someone local to the area if possible, but any advice is appreciated.

Well I'm pretty impartial - I don't work in the damp proofing industry. Not sure what that post was all about.

Is your flat genuinely damp? How does this manifest itself?

I agree that too many companies only come along and advise (after a quick 'survey' with a damp proof meter) that you need to purchase, at vast cost, their services re chemical injection. There may be other ways of dealing with damp.

There are companies which are more expert than that I agree. Try looking at the 'Seeking Specialists' part of this site, and follow links to company websites.that should give you some idea of the sorts of firms which are used to dealing with period buildings. Also SPAB has lists of reputable comanies with relevant expertise. which aren't simply there to sell you chemical injection.

It's worth also reading up a little about damp in period buildings.
