... I said 3 hours ago :lol: We discovered one of the stair treads was bending very alarmingly so that was the project for today, get it fixed enough so that we needn't worry about crashing through it. Under the stairs is an area untouched by the 'modernization' the rest of the house has suffered - lime washes, tiles, the lot. Next to that is some of the same stunning wallpaper my daughter was helping with earlier in the week, so I thought I'd just have a peak beneath that. Now it's 3 hours later and we've had more of the wallpaper off that, a section of polystyrene ceiling tiles down (to reveal lovely paneling !), and then somehow moved to an upstairs room and have completely stripped the exterior wall there and removed the old storage heater while we were at it. Ummmmmmm. To us, this looks like awesome progress, because now we can see lots of lime plaster in need of only minor repairs - YAY! However, I can see that to some people, it looks like we trashed the house. The day before the inlaws arrive. Errrrrrr....

Sounds like my dream, I love stripping everything away to reveal original stuff, it's making good I struggle with!

This is under the stairs, lots of lime wash going on and a cute little window, sadly also bad damp but I think it's sort-able

these tiles confuse me. The are on exactly the same level as the concrete floor - poured at some point in the 1950s or 1960s. We don't know what the original floor of the house was, but tiles were certainly likely at least in the hallway. But if these are the original tiles, how are they on same level as the concrete floor? And if they're not, then why on earth would they replace tiles under the stairs but no where else, makes no sense. But if they are original in situ???

Ooh lots of lovely discoveries there! As for the tiles, is it exactly the same level as the concrete, or could the concrete juts be a thin screed on top of the rest of the tiles maybe?

There are exactly the same level, exactly. And sadly I don't think it's a screed on top of the rest of the original tiles, because there are a few minor cracks in a few places, with no evidence of any tiles underneath.

Stripping out and finding whats underneath certainly is a fun part. (apart from getting rid of the debris)

A couple of weeks back I started on our Kitchen. Its about 3 inches longer now.

After shifting the cooker and worktop this is what we had to start peeling back through time.

One pile of rubble, plaster board, double bagged asbestos sheet and a stack of timber later.. The hidden side door is revealed.

All adding to mysteries of the cottage's history and previous layouts.

I'm jealous, because I haven't discovered anything like that!

It will have been a side entrance from the passage way. The other side is rendered over so not much room for anything illicit, I hope!
