I've a Victorian property with casement windows in my two bay's(my understanding is that casement windows came in later than Victorian times??? so they may have been changed around the 20's??? next door ...we are two semis and the only houses like it on the road, have the exact same windows?) that need work done to them. Thing is, I'm toying with the idea of having them remade with double glazing....wooden frames of course....one firm who specialise in this type of work (Restoration of sash windows etc) told me they HAVE to replace with double glazing nowadays, is this correct or am I being sold a line??

My understanding from my own ongoing vinery project is that you can repair existing windows and keep them as single glazing.
If you replace windows then they need to conform with Part L1B of the building regulations for thermal efficiency - which basically means they will have to be double glazed.
The point at which a 'repair' becomes a 'replacement' is not entirely clear cut but I've been told if I replace more than about 25% of my woodwork it will be considered as replacement. In my case as more than 25% of it has turned to compost I don't have a choice - it would also be ridiculous to go to the expense I'm about to and engineer in single glazed heat losses.
Glazing contractors can be FENSA registered which means they can certify their own work conforms to building regulations. They may well play their interpretation safe to ensure there is no question about conforming.
If your house is in a conservation area or is listed then that may overrule the building regulations requirement.
I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with a more professional understanding of the rules and regulations....

I'm certainly not an expert but I believe it goes like this:
Listed building -> replace like with like, so if it was single glazed it has to stay single glazed.
Non listed building - repair -> do what you like
Non listed building - replacement -> double glazing required.

From my reading of the regulations, if you are reglazing or repairing an existing window then you do not need to meet current thermal regulations, although you do need to take account of the glazing safety regulations. However, if you replace the primary frame (essentially that part of the window which is fixed to the wall) this counts as replacement, and the new window will need to meet current standards.
So you can replace a sash frame and put in single glazing, so long as it's going back in the existing box frame.

Possibly, but there are plenty of Victorian casements. The Art's and Craft Movement (which might be anything from about 1860 to 1925) often used casements with a nod towards medievalism. Any chance of posting a picture.
Yes, the folks replying above are right - you'll almost certainly have to use double glazing to meet building regs.
