Back in the early 20th century, my family on my mothers side were stockbrokers and quite wealthy. They lived in a big house called "The Grange" (a mansion house?) in Yardley in Birmingham, actually about a mile or two from where I live now. It was quite rural at the time. They suffered badly in the crash in the 30s and had to sell unfortunately. I heard it had been demolished along with a few other big houses, to make way for the urban sprawl, but found out the other day that it still exists!! It has been split into around 10 flats. Here is it is!!! If only it were still my family home.

Wouldn't that be lovely PlasticPigeon. What an interesting story too. My late maternal Grandmother used to insist that generations back we were descended from the Earl of Powys but there's no sign of any nobility in us now. Fortunes fall as well as rise!

I would guess that a lot depends on the definition of 'descended from'. My understanding is that aristo's in 'the good old days' were not adverse to putting themselves about a bit. :wink: :lol:

Well yes quite. Our Earl of Powys must have indulged in quite exotic tastes too, if a little beyond the limits of normal moral conduct, to have given rise to a whole family of zebras.

With a title such as Earl of Powys it's tempting to bring other, more indigenous, livestock into the discussion, though it may be best to just call it a day on this particular digression. :wink:
