This is quite shocking. Why does someone take a chainsaw in the night and cut down a tree like this?

The Northumbria police commissioner said she was "incandescent" that it looked like vandalism.

It says that "Northumbria Police said inquiries were ongoing to establish whether any criminal offences had been committed". Since it is a scheduled monument and was made a World Heritage Site in 1987, there can be no "whether" about it - it's illegal!

NB I know it's not strictly a "period property" but even so...

Considering around 80% of crimes reported are pretty much pushed by the wayside the police will do absolutely nothing except log the incident.

A 16 year old on his own didn't seem likely. Now they have arrested a 60 year old:
