This is quite shocking. Why does someone take a chainsaw in the night and cut down a tree like this?
It says that "Northumbria Police said inquiries were ongoing to establish whether any criminal offences had been committed". Since it is a scheduled monument and was made a World Heritage Site in 1987, there can be no "whether" about it - it's illegal!
NB I know it's not strictly a "period property" but even so...
