Hi everyone, first post so hope you guys can help...
The bottom half of my cottage was built in 1767. The top half was added as a 1970's extension.
I have opened up the original sandstone fireplace. However, when the first floor extension was added, the chimney was capped (just with the floor) at ground floor ceiling level.
I would like to install a wood burning stove and have three questions;
1. Do I have to build a chimney extension?
or
2. can I use a modern metal flue system, & if so, which route option might be best;
a) take a flue up the existing 'half chimney', out of the wall and up the outside of the gable end above head height?
or
b) install a flue up the 'half chimney', through the ceiling, bedroom, loft & roof on the inside rather than outside?
Finally,
3. Will the work be subject to building control regulations?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
