I just found a shoe in my floor :)

I know this sounds odd, but i really did just find a shoe in my floor And, it was not made in hong kong.
Flat: Georgian, 1st floor, 1790 build.

One of the guys who are lifting the floors and cleaning out all of the crap (and, I mean, lots and lots of crap), said he found a treasure for me and presented the shoe. I don't know if it's a man's or woman's shoe. PHoto attached. I googled georgian shoes, and there were a few photos that resembled this shoe, though those photos had huge heels. This does not have a heel, but of course, it has holes in it, so rather used.

Nice find! Do read the apotropiaos site, it's very interesting. I found a single shoe in my floor too. I might either put it on display in a glass case, or reconceal it under the stairs with a letter explaining where it was found. What do you think you will do with yours?

Well, the glass box is certainly a lovely idea. And, I will likely do this, at least for as long as I own the flat. After, maybe return it but definitely add a modern shoe too

I found pulleys and cords too (other post). this is more concerning as with all of the heavy engineering works needed to my floor, this will surely be damaged. I think I need to remove what I can (have access to), and think creatively how to install in a deep frame/glass case. I don't have endless budgets to save and then re-install, etc.

During my time working on older and period properties carrying out plumbing work I've found all manner of things under floorboards the majority of which have been empty cigarette packets and match boxes left behind mostly by plumbers as it always seemed to be under the boards which had been previously lifted either to install pipework or carryout repairs to bell wire systems.

I was always told as a youngster that the draw, or pull wires and mechanisms for bell call systems and pipes for gas lighting, were fitted by plumbers which leads me to assume the detritus left nearby was left by plumbers. I've also found graffiti written on the underside of floorboards and on off cuts of small pieces of batten sized wood one of which had the writers thoughts about the parentage of the foreman. Another described a workmate as a 'swanky dick'. I resisted temptation and put them back with some added notes... :twisted:

One of the finds I made under a church roof was a 1910 newspaper with the names of the men working on the job at that time written on it. That was found in about November 2000 so I put it back along with a copy of a newspaper dated 1st January 2000 with all the names of the lads working there at that time.

I've found bodies of all sorts of animals including cats and it's my theory that the bodies cats found on the tops of walls are from cats who have crawled up there to die either because they were unwell or it was warmer there. Some of the animals skeletons I've found have been within the fabric of the walls but there again I think they were dead on the top of the wall and had been 'built in' when roofs had either been raised, covered with a different material or at a different pitch which required the walls to then be built up inside to meet the underside of the roof covering.

PS I've often written remarks along with the date and what' been happening in the world and left them within the fabric of our house here and last week I popped a cd of the X-ray of my dodgy hip behind some paneling for someone to find sometime... 8)

Lovely find! I wouldn't remove anything from its place though - read M.R. James and you realise what a heap of trouble meddling can provoke!

I thought cats were buried for luck? But I'm prepared to believe they'd crawl away to die too.
