I am in a mid terrace house that sits in the middle of a uniform late georgian terrace. Would I need LBC to plant a wisteria on the front of the house - none of the other houses on rest of the square have any climbing plants? I'm not intending to do this btw, but am curious to know the answer.

I have never heard of plants being applicable but we need one of our COs to answer.

No idea, but if it did hypothetically happen, you could hypothetically creep out in the hypothetical dead of night with some hypothetical secateurs and hypothetically chop it off at the base of the stem.

Actually no - I bought a wisteria standard that I am growing in a large pot on hte patio in my garden at the back that made me think of it. Was just curious as to whether all the rules about altering listing buildings are irrelevent if a living thing obscures it! Genuiinely hypothetical... for now!

However I should add that you still need permission to alter the building behind its protective cloak of greenery.

time to plant some laylandii then in preparation for the massive glass extension that i plan to build right across the front of my house ,you know, the one that will be framed in blue neon lights and have a huge glass draw bridge for a front door that will be lowered and raised with gold rope.
then of course those pesky laylandii will need to be chopped down because of the hassle they cause with the neighbours.

Someone I am aware of (no names, no pack drill) planted 25 semi-mature leylandii to block a view that had been crucial in the refusal (on appeal) of his second application for a garage in a conservation area. His third application was refused (on appeal, again) since the leylandii -
1. emphasised the green link in anotherwise largely continuous street frontage, and
2. (a fall-back position) weren't "permanent" anyway.
Oh we do have fun sometimes... :lol:

That's reassuring. A new build in our house's former orchard was refused on appeal partly because of it blocking the view of our house. Since then the land has remained untouched, and is rapidly returning to jungle, with only the upstairs now in view from the road.

I too have a hypothetical wisteria! Bought two years ago, grazed of all greenery in the house even before it was planted (house rabbit - don't ask!), just recovering after planting outside when the slugs got to it last year, produced a couple of buds this spring (against all odds after being frozen solid for a month last winter), grazed off by snails again, showed a bud yesterday but hard frost this morning may have got it again! At three years old it is still only 4 inches high! I'm beginning to think the Wisteria clad frontage is just not meant to be!

In a previous listed house, I unknowingly sailed close to the LBC wind by attaching a trellis to the top of the wall that ran along the front of the house. This was done to improve our privacy and protect our dog from a murderous, wall-leaping hound that lived opposite. The CO told me that, strictly, I should have obtained LBC for this trellis, because it affected the view of a listed building from a highway.
"The only thing I wouldn't have been able to object to is plants growing in the ground," he said. "They are outside my brief."
He then winked, told me that his office was incredibly busy and that, unless a neighbour complained about the the trellis, he would have no knowledge of it.

I would be careful about planting a Wisteria at the front of house unless you have plenty of time for pruning. Once they get going they are incredibly rampant and during the growing season you can almost see them growing and entwining themselves in whatever is nearby - I had a friend who swore she had watched a tendril wrap itself around a lock of hair while sitting in their garden. To flower well, they have to be pruned twice a year: firstly back to five buds in July/Aug and then again back to two buds in Jan/March. They need to be very well secured - which means putting strong support wires into the fabric of the building and can get under roof tiles if left untended.
They are very beautiful however and smell wonderful, so if you are prepared to look after it, I suppose I'd give it a go. Ithink the best ones are Black Dragon (I think it's called) or Macrobotrys which has the longest flowers - up to a meter long sometimes. Be careful of buying a white one and make sure you see the white flower as they sometimes come up slightly bluish grey - not a particularly distinguished plant.
