Hydraulic Lime 3.5

Hi, i'm having the outside of the house repointed using Hydraulic Lime mortar. 3/4 of the house has been done. The guy doing it is coming back in the next few weeks to complete the job. However, he has now told me that the 23 bags of mortar I have stored on a pallet in the outbuilding is past its use by date (May 2023).

Quite annoyed that he never mentioned the use by date when he went off to work on his own house earlier this year.

Has anyone got experience of using it for pointing past the use by date or any advice please.

It'll be fine there is a lot of safety built into those dates from the manufacturers to protect themselves, in reality a few months past it won't really have affected anything, as long as it is all still in the original unbroken packaging so no CO2 is getting in there. I've kept powdered NHL3.5 in an airtight food safe bucket for nearly two years and it was fine.

I've got half open bags of NHL mortar that I just sealed by folding and placing a brick on top, I often come back to it for small jobs. If you were really that concerned just mix a bit with some water (as dry mix as possible) and butter the top of a brick (dipped in water) and leave to dry. If it goes off / hard its good to use.
