Huge mirror & India Yellow walls!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas break with lots of delicious food and that Santa filled your period stockings with everything you were wishing for

I thought it was about time I posted a few piccies of our Christmas gift and the new India Yellow walls! I have had to crop them somewhat as the mahoosive radiator cabinet didn't get finished in time for Santa's visit and currently looks a bit of an eyesore!!!



The giant Art Nouveau style mirror frame won't be to everyone's taste of course. In fact we came very close to reselling it shortly after purchase in 2013, mainly because it is just soooo huge, plus it was originally all one colour and looked a bit odd :lol: Anyway, I decided to paint it - am still not quite done - and the snug was crying out for a statement piece after we sold a large Arts & Crafts display cabinet that was too large for this house.......it also helps throw some light around the room!

The mirror, wonkly glass, luverly. Not really in-period, but then Nouveau was not supposed to tamely fit in.

Thanks Ivor We hadn't intended to use that colour either......or at least, not in that room. We bought it for a bedroom, but had second thoughts as it is so very 'in your face' and imagined guests may not appreciate it! Initially I started painting the snug in F&B Olive, but it just felt a bit too 'matchy matchy' what with the dark olive antique sofa, vintage dark green velvet G P & J Baker Henley Damask curtains and plentiful green accents around the room. Plus, despite being South-facing, it has a tendency to be a darkish space what with all the beams and large brick fireplace. The 5l tin was sitting there, so off I went :roll:

The Olive has been put to good use in our bedroom where it forms a restful backdrop to - completely out of character for me - white bedding!

Moreover, we're gradually moving away from our previous slavish dedication to Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts and seem to be heading in a more eclectic, Aesthetic Movement direction........

Mims that looks wonderful - thanks for posting the pics! Fascinated to see India Yellow! It's very close to my Print Room Yellow, just a tad stronger that's all. It looks great and the mirror too - love that! as Ivor says you really do have a flair. I think it's great to mix and match a bit as well.

I've been trying to decide on a colour for our snug and can't! There isn't much plaster in it, it's mainly bare brick and then a red (irugs!) rug on a flagstone floor. I've gone for curtains in a nice woollen tweed in brick colours with a bit of sludge blue and green. Wondering about painting the plaster work Breakfast Room Green by FnB but I don't know. It will then be brick red and green, very Christmassy!

Here it is - always wondered about lime plastering over the brick but most people like it inauthentically brick! Nothing's been bought for this room, except the rug and curtains, I've had to use my London furniture down here as the current tenants don't want it!

Lovely, Joce. The snug looks very... snug!

I hope I'm not sounding too avuncular if I express a wee bit of concern about the number of plugs in the socket to the right (in the photo) of the sofa! I'm also slightly worried about the supply to the double socket to the right of the Rayburn, in the bottom picture. It may be an optical illusion, but it looks as though the supply cable is dangling loose. I'm sure Chris will have a note on his 'to do' list to put this into trunking, like the other ones.

Now I'll stop poking my nose in!

Given how dark it looks i'd be tempted to either leave it white or a very pastel shade of either red or green (maybe apple). Something bright may be too contrasting and OTT. It does depict a depressing Xmas just staring at an oven though - hope it was better for you than that. Love the brick work detail.

Thank you Joce!!! The room is still not finished......Pip is away now till the weekend and I was hoping to crack on with some more serious stuff then, although sadly we had a 20ft+ deciduous tree uproot a couple of days ago so think his time at home will be spent dealing with that......there's only so much a girl at home alone can do :roll: For now I'm just back to stripping the nasty textured paper we have in so many places here!

We also need to find a (larger) rug. I had already heard great things about irugs and have spotted a couple there that might do the job, but they are the polypropylene ones and I'd really rather have wool. They are a super price though! Pip has actually been instructed to go to view an ebay rug whilst away, but I fear the colours will be all wrong. We've made it particularly difficult for ourselves by choosing such an eclectic mix of colours in the room! Still half the fun is searching for the right piece......

Love your snug!!! As Penners says, it certainly looks the epitome of snug and cosy With regards to your brick dilemma, I'm not sure......I do rather like your brick arches. A couple of houses near us have similar internally (we have some too, but unfortunately ours are outside ). I wonder whether lime plastering them will detract from or accentuate their character??? That said, I love the idea of a room that looks forever Christmassy - Pip almost convinced me to keep our decs up in the snug* as it looked so lovely over the hols - and Breakfast Room Green is a fab colour. I thought we had used it somewhere previously and have been trawling back through ancient piccies, but although I know we definitely had the sample pot I don't think we did in the end.

I did dig out a few 'green' rooms we've done though and have attached pics out of interest. The first is from our last house - another pic of an unfinished room as the light fitting was later swapped out and the skirting hadn't been completed :roll: That was more of a sage green.....Craig & Rose Tapestry Green, if I remember correctly.
The other two are from about twelve years ago, when we had our family house in Hampshire. The green in the hall was a Morris & Co colour - no longer available? - with F&B Brinjal below the dado. The kitchen.....I can't quite recall, but think it was another Craig & Rose colour.

We like our greens, lol :lol:

How's the bathroom progressing, btw? Can't wait to see the finished article!!!

I hope I'm not sounding too avuncular if I express a wee bit of concern about the number of plugs in the socket to the right (in the photo) of the sofa!

I don't think there's any need for concern as long as the multi-way adapters are correctly fused.

In the good old days, unfused 3-way adapters were available and these could indeed cause overheating of the socket, with the attendant risk of fire, but all such adapters that comply with modern standards will have an integral fuse, thus limiting the amount of power that can be drawn from a single socket to a safe level. It also helps that very few plug-in devices these days draw significant power anyway, though that is no guarantee that someone, somewhere won't try plugging in two electric fires and a kettle into one socket . . . which is where the adapter fuse should save the day.

The PC system on which I'm typing this has a total of NINE plugs, all plugged into two socket strips and thence to a single 13A socket. No problem.

Wow, fabulous green rooms there Mims! Absolutely love the Brinjal used with that Morris green! Such a beautiful curtain in that room too! I really like green and red together.

I quite like dark rooms as well. I have some really light rooms for sewing and sitting by the fire but the snug with the Rayburn is nice for when you can't be bothered to light a fire! It might look like an oven but that is an illusion! The reality in winter is that the Rayburn seriously struggles to heat the 9 radiators in the upper storeys never mind the oven! 9 is woefully inadequate for the size of the cottage by the way, 4 of the rooms have no heating at all and the other rooms have one rad where they could do with 2 or more. It's a really rubbish solution for this size house. It's better now the roof is new and insulated and we've insulated every window but the house is still cold by modern standards.

Anyway, a room with darker colours like strong reds and yellows and greens gives the illusion of snugness for sure! And this room is actually warm - not T shirt warm - but warm enough to take off your coat!

Yes the wiring is something of a compromise. Another problem when you decide to pick all the plaster off the walls! We need to sort it out!

Great piping above the Rayburn. Well executed pipework can be a period feature in its own right. The insistence on invisible pipes is modern....

Colourwise, what about some green stencilling. Perhaps less dominant than solid colour.

I'm not sure hidden pipes are... Visited Wray Castle up in the Lake District a while back - Built in 1840 in the gothic revival style, one of the "features" cursed by the people involved in the maintenance is the drainpipes for the roof. They are all hidden within the walls, are constantly getting blocked, and are a nightmare to keep clear.
