How to remove plaster residue from beams?

Any ideas anyone? Have just had our dining room plastered and despite best efforts to mask and subsequently clean there is still a fair bit of residue. Would prefer a chemical option as abrasive methods only seem to have been part successful.

I just cut along the join between plaster and woodwork with a sharp Stanley knife and then gently scraped the overspill off with a paint scraper, or sharp Stanley blade.
