How to put a soil pipe through a wall.

This might seem a daft question, but I can't see how to do this neatly with plastic pipe. i can buy a 90 degree elbow with a socket on both ends or a socket on one end. However if i Have a 90 deg bend with a socket butting up to the wall joining the pipe that comes out of the back of the pan the pipe tha runs parallel to the wall is too far from the wall. What I want is a 110mm 90 degree sweep so that I can cut the pipe to length so that it can go through the wall and join to the back of the pan and curve as soon as it exits the outside wall, but this isn't made. I don't want to make a bigger hole in the brick wall to accomodate a socket. What can be done??

I can't quite picture exactly what you mean, but have you looked at some of the flexible and adjustable pipes and connectors?

But why is cast iron more appropriate? If the intention is to match methods and materials with the age of the house then perhaps lead is also an option? Or just a bucket? Or no inside 'facilities' at all? Our 1550 house has been well and truly ruined by inappropriate modernisation though the installation of indoor WCs :wink:

Besides, even standard cast iron fittings won't solve the OP's problem.

My first thought was that it wouldn't take too much to widen the hole in the exterior wall to allow a standard bend to be used, but my second though was that I wouldn't like the idea of having a push-fit joint effectively within the wall. So how about using a solvent-welded bend to connect to the soil pipe? Solvent-weld fittings generally have a smaller diameter than the push-fit collars and there's no chance of a properly made welded joint leaking into the wall.

Lead also looks 'old' and can be made to measure.

So many of these sorts of things seem more about style choices than historical accuracy. A bit like decoration schemes. Nothing wrong with that, of course, as long as the reasons are clear.

Yes Ivor, that is exactly the type of thing I was looking for, and I agree cast iron is far superior. However I am cutting corners and trying to do things quickly as I shall probably not be in this place forever and am am now growing tired of DIY. I have jazz guitar to play, guitars to make, friends and family around the country that I haven't seen for years as I have no weekends, and in this case a bathroom to rip out and fit in 2 weeks. The first week has gone and I haven't started the fit bit yet! You mighht approve of the tiles I've chosen though, Victorian/Edwardian replicas at £90/m^2. Good job the bathroom is so dinky.

Good. Although you may be surprised that I should say so.
I spent, o gawd he's going to say 30,000 hours again, about 30,000 hours on our last house, plus routine maintenance. DIY can become not only a way of life but pretty much the whole of life.
Not that I seem to have learned... still grinding slowly on with the garage, and a list of other stuff still to do.
At least we got ourselves a nice(ish) car to put in it, and once again we're going to the Revival.

I sympathise pigeon. I too am growing tired of DIY, and am choosing modern solutions where it doesn't seem to matter. Things don't always have to be authentic. You, more than most people, have gone the extra mile to make sure things suit the house, and avoid the usual horrors, but we all have to compromise sometimes.
Noj's suggestion looks like the right thing to me. Would that work? If not, then I think I'd chase out a little bit more of the brickwork.

the hole in the brickwork can be made good with a lime mortar with lots of brickdust added as both a colourant and a pozzolan - generally referred to as a 'plastic' repair.

Another one who has done more than her fair share of DIY here - currently on our seventh property in approaching twenty five years, all of which have required varying degrees of restoration, from basic cosmetic stuff through to the full *unmortgageable wreck* type.......much of which we've tackled ourselves - and I feel your pain PP and Zebra as you've both worked miracles in your homes :roll:

You need to give yourselves a huge pat on the back, then take time out for some *me time*......have decided to take my own advice and plan to have our (well-deserved, if I say so myself!) first holiday in nine years over the coming weeks

I'm probably missing the point here but if the problem is the lack of space for the bend, wouldn't it be simpler to move the pan a bit further away from the wall?

No that isn't the problem. The problem is that in plastic pipe there is no such thing as a 90 degree bend followed by enough pipe to go through a wall and into the toilet pan. The 90 degree bends are always followed either by a stub over which a socket must fit, or a socket which fits over a pipe. This means that there is always a joint buried somwhere within the wall, with a larger than necessary cut out in the outside of the wall to accomodate this. As Ivor's picture shows, this 90 degree sweep is available in cast iron.

Ah. I see. Presumably because since the days when cast iron was the norm, soil pipes have normally ceased to be run down the outside of the wall. Sorry I wasn't much help (that's nothing new).
