Did anyone read Olivier Labesse's booklet on French lime? I do think it is nice the way he has gone to the trouble of producing it, in English, and then giving it away for free.

I have looked briefly yes, I will print it off for reference as soon as I get a new ink thingy... and yes, it is wonderful of him. Thank you so much. We've been so bogged down in other things no-one has had time to say that I think. The more people who do share their knowledge and expertise the better. We may have different views on matters, especially lime (which does stir up much passion...and a great deal of misunderstanding) and different approaches for our own homes, but some friendly disagreement never hurts and we do get some hugely interesting stuff posted here. There is in my view little more satisfying to the eye than a wall of natural materials with lime mortar - it's simply right.

I'm fortunate to live near what was at the time of repair - about a decade ago - the largest lime mortar contract in Europe (so it says on the plaque) - the Lambley Railway Viaduct , II* Listed, now alas no longer a railway line but part of the South Tyne Trail. Whenever I walk over it I feel thankful that it was so beautifully repaired with NO CEMENT and even more thankful I don't have quite as much pointing to do - it simply feels like it.

I've just been reading NT's fascinating stuff on energy saving. Thought provoking.

The translated article on 'chaux'from your French correspondent ( many thanks for this ) prompted the thought that there must be a considerable body of knowledge re period properties in other countries - in particular of timber framed buildings.
The use ( and availability ) of chaux / lime , for example, appears to be quite routine for older buildings in the SW of France -where we are at 'pains' to restore our own ancient 'pile'. Good to know that the 'UK' in the forum is not too restrictive . .

Indeed. Here's an interesting paper from Slovenia which, if I've understood the transclation correctly, says that traditional lime putty is better than chucking a bit of cement in. Worth a read though.
