My 19th century home which has a stucco fronted gable end has a sand / cement rendered coping at the top of the stucco wall i.e. the horizontal surface, about 450mm wide, which faces the sky and follows the pitch of the roof. This coping, like the roof needs to be watertight. There are a few minor cracks in this sand/ cement coping which are starting to cause minor damage to the stucco cornice detailing on the side of the coping. Can anybody suggest the best way to repair/ waterproof this surface?
My lime plasterer who specialises in both lime rendering and mouldings is reluctant to remove the existing sand /cement coping which is relatively sound as he feels it could open an expensive can of worms e.g. damaging/loosing some of the cornice moulding or exposing/ damaging soft fragile bricks underneath etc. He arranged for some lead workers to come and look at it with a view to covering the coping with lead but this too would involve cutting or drilling into the fabric of the building to secure the lead. I am considering in this one instance applying a waterproofing product such as Aquaseal. Dose anybody have any better suggestions?
