Replacing insulation in our attic rooms. Slate roof with a non-breathable bitumen felt.
Rafters are 75mm deep and so with a 50mm ventilation gap this leaves very little space for insulation between the rafters.
I want to keep some of the roof timbers (purlins and trusses) visible, whilst wanting to manage the temperature in summer and winter. Sound insulation from the road down below is also quite important too as the traffic is quite loud on the front elevation with no insulation.
So I’m looking to use some of the tongue and groove wood fibre boards (steico or pavatex or similar) and attach them directly to the underside of the rafters.
Probably put some insulating lime plaster on as well (50mm) eventually!
I just don’t know what thickness board to get, the pavatex ones come in anything from 30mm to 120mm. Anyone have any experience of these?
I should add we will be re/establishing one of the attic rooms as and office and one as a bedroom. There is insulation in the attic floor.
I’ll probably be installing these myself and so I need something ‘manageable’ - I guess the thicker boards will be quite heavy!
Any thoughts on what the minimum thickness I should consider?
