How much should I pay for a hardwood window?

We need some of our windows replacing. At the moment they are single glazed softwood. We have had to do lots of repairs, but now need to get rid.
We want to replace with double glazed hardwood. What is a reasonable price to pay, with fitting :?:

Rough sizes - 6' by 4' , and 4' by 2'. They would need openers.

I have just had 10 Iroko sash windows and 10 Iroko casement windows made.

The casement windows are mock sash with the top pane being hinged and the bottom pane fixed.

The sash windows averaged at about £500, the biggest being 1m wide by 1.45m high.

The casement windows averaged about £300 each the biggest being 0.8m wide by 1m high.

Hopefully Biff Vernon will spot your post and reply. He should be able to give you a good indication. However, I think it would be helpful if you could post a clearer idea of the design/style of window that you're looking for.

For those rough sizes and without knowing about the details I'd be thinking of £400 to £800, which is probably rather more than Keycare's. But I would never use iroko as this is the sort of tree that looks much better in the heart of a tropical rain-forest and all of us who care the slightest jot about our planet would not want them cut down to make windows for people in Britain. So don't say 'hardwood' when you mean 'sustainably grown English or European Oak', or you are likely to be contributing to the destruction of the rain-forest. Anyway, oak looks much nicer and has far more dinner-party credibility.
And I wouldn't make mock sashes because I just don't do mock. Anyway they're probably in contravention of the Building Regulations because they can't be used for an emergency exit.
Which way round is the 6' x 4' oblong? Portrait or landscape?

Thanks for the information.

The windows are all 'landscape', ie, all wider than they are tall.

The windows we have at the moment are divided up into lots of panes, 18 in the biggest, 15 in the next one, and the two small windows have 8.

On the 15 pane window, it is hinged at the top, so the whole window opens ( or it would if I could bash it hard enough). On the 18 pane, half is hinged at the top, and this can just about be opened, but to close it you have to go outside and thump it back into position!

Obviously this poses problems for security, as there is no way they can be left open if there is no-one at home, but as the 15 pane is a bedroom, we are suffering from lack of ventilation by not being able to open it.

To replace them, we need a large opener at the side for exit, and small opener at the top. As for putting other 'bars' in, not sure how it will look. :?

Have you thought about a 'Yorkshire Sash'? (You don't have to be in Yorkshire.) The long window would have three sections, either one or two of which slide sideways. The smaller windows would have two sections, one fixed and one sliding.

This design has the advantage of no bits like hinges and sash pulleys and cords to go wrong and you can clean the whole window from indoors very easily, a problem with hinged casements.
