How do I find the right architect/adviser?

Have just found this forum and have spent a fascinating couple of hours reading.

Can anyone advise me – I want to put a small extension on our cottage, the existing is mainly stone, some cob and some brick with pantile roof. We are in a conservation area in Somerset. – I assume I need an architect rather than a plan drawer for the design, but also need other external surface renovations to the existing. So how can I tell if an architect who is prepared to look at a small domestic extension and renovation, is going to do the right thing regarding improving the cottage rather than creating potential problems?

I have already learnt, in the last hour, that I made a fatal mistake 15 years ago when I cement rendered the cob (above 4ft of stone) gable – so that will need to be changed, so clearly I need someone who will advise me properly as to any other points that may need sorting.

So I suppose I am asking for some tips as to how to find the right adviser, I’m sure they will all tell me they know what they are doing, but my 60 years have made me sceptical when people tell me how good they are!

The SPAB will be able to give you some advice on suitable people, and the RIBA has a list of those with conservation expertise also.

We were recommended two smallish firms in our South Somerset area by a local EH/SPAB recommended surveyor. We have used one extensively over the last ten years and have no complaints about their work, apart from the fact that they are always busy and booked up for ages! The local CO may be a good start if they are not 'far too busy to discuss' it! If you would like the names of the builders, PM me, I don't want to be moaned at for advertising!

Well, that depends on how clear you are in your own mind about what you need, and whether it will work.

If you have a firm idea of the design of the extension, and you're confident that it will dovetail into the existing building effectively, then you may only need an architectural technician who can (a) draw up the plans for you, and (b) ensure that all regulations are complied with.

But bear in mind that someone also needs to project-manage the construction, and you might need an architect to do that for you - or at least to recommend someone who can. Unless you feel capable of doing it yourself.

I would always employ an architect. Few technicians have much eye for the details required.

And if things go wrong, architects have a body to whom you can complain!
