How do I clean a brass letterbox?

Hi, my house has an original brass letterbox. Does anyone know the best thing to use to clean it up?

The National Trust use Autosol to keep their brass shiny. But I'm afraid you'll have to wait for someone else to tell you how to get it shiny in the first place.

thanks it is shiny but its all the fiddly hard to reach bits that have gone a bit green!

Autosol ( available from Halfords ) is the way to go. Cover the letterbox in a layer of that. Then leave it for about 20 mins ( if you have kids/ pets/ postmen or others who might get it on themselves do it when it won't cause a problem ), the stuff should begin to turn from a white cream to greenish and yucky. Wipe as much as you can off with kitchen roll and then get rid of the rest in the fiddly bits with an old toothbrush. You may have to repeat the process several times if it is very dirty, but you should eventually get to something that starts to look cleaner and then to keep it nice you can just use normal Brasso wadding for a quick go to bring it back to perfection. Try and keep the cleaning stuff off any surrounding paintwork ( although it will wipe off with a damp cloth etc ) or essentially stonework/ brick which it can permanently stain. Mine looked like it hadn't been polished for years, but is returning to shiny after a few treatment sessions.

Or, if you've cleaned with HP sauce, just lick it off.

Then every time the postman pushes the by now huge volume of mail through the postbox, it gets a little bit more polished.

Top tip - election time is very good for receiving extra "direct marketing" through the door. :wink:
