Hi all
I’ve just lifted the old fitted carpets in a ‘longish’ corridor in my home. The corridor travels east west for about 12 ft and then makes a sharp turn to travel north south for a further 20ft. The shorter length of corridor has old pine floor boards which are slightly greyed in colour whilst the 20ft length has relatively new light pine floorboards.
I’m thinking of painting both sections of this floor to allow a consistent colour throughout and I fancied the idea of dark ebony similar to those very dark almost black floorboards you see in some Victorian houses.
Can anybody suggest the best product for achieving this? I’ve looked at some of the black floor paints but they all seem to be very glossy and I don’t think a mirrored finish would be appropriate.
I’ve also considered using ordinary black acrylic paints but I’m not sure (a) whether an eggshell would be better than a satin finish and (b) whether an ordinary acrylic paint would even last. That said this corridor doesn’t take very heavy foot traffic and a little bit of ware might make it look all the more authentic. The only other alternative I can think of is a coloured satin floor varnish(although I haven't seen ebony) or a stain followed by a clear satin floor varnish. My concern however, is that the translucent properties of stains and varnishes wouldn’t mask the two different floor finishes that I’m dealing with. Does anybody know how the Victorians created their black floorboards or what the modern equvalent might be? I’m sure they didn’t use real ebony, just pine coloured to look like ebony.
