How can I make my beach hut walls look distressed?

Slightly off topic but I’m in the process of fitting out my timber beach hut. I’ve just finished insulating the walls and I’m proposing lining the walls with vertical T&G timber planks but ultimately I want to create an old distressed nautical feel to the interior with fishing net hanging from the ceiling, oil lamps and other nautical regalia hanging about. Can anybody advise on the best type of paint/stain and method of application to get the new T&G boards to look old and slightly worn? I guess there’s a clue in looking at old painted furniture or furniture painted to look old where for example the predominant colour is blue but there are patches of cream undercoat or even bare wood showing through to imitate wear and tear. I wondered also if limewash would give an authentic look in this situation? The problem is, new pine T&G boards are so white and bright in colour and if left unpainted they would make the place look like a Swedish sauna. Any suggestions appreciated

Ha! We've got a beach hut too. Just give it time. A beach environment is very stressful, salt sun, wind, sand-blasting...

Isn't it wax and distressing and stuff? There are proper techniques to get the look.

Biff. Salt , sun and natural sand blasting might achieve the effects in about 5 years if I leave the beach hut doors open but I want to achieve an aged makeover ASAP. I’ve already got a beach hut party arranged for July.

If you are wanting an aged look internally but without the stress there are two ways you can achieve this

If you want a darker colour to show through you need to paint your base colour in two to 3 shades darker than your top coat... then just paint the darker layer under the top coat.. and lightly sand back to reveal the bottom layer and areas of wood... if you dont want to go to as much trouble you can just paint the interior of your hut in one colour and then buy what is called antiquing patina from most Diy stores... this is a brown coloured thick gloopy liquid that you just brush on with a large brush on your area... wait for a few minutes and remove with a damp cloth... This will stick to indentations and grains in your wood etc but with none of the sanding and is so much less messy and much quicker and easier to attain a great look.A bottle of this costs about £8 and on top of your normal paint its also a cheaper and less time consuming option.If you are going to do it this way i can recommend using baby wipes to remove the patina as its quicker easier gives a great finish and of course is cleaner and is easy to clean up!

Its been about for around 4 or 5 years now so not exactly new... its just a case of being aware of it.. its one fo those things i suppose if you didnt know it was there you would easily miss it.Its made by Bedec

My skin's got enough patina already... but I'll try that stuff on something inconspicuous and see what happens.
