Im enjoying the discussion about bogs, thankyou all.
Were going to be first time pp'rs and tending to think worst case scenarios, whilst raring to get stuck in.
The house we are looking at is just below (bordering) a protected blanket bog(one of the many reasons we like it).
It has "serious damp" and no drainage at all, and a stream running through the swampy garden straight off the peat bogs. Any helpful pointers here? the last thing I want to do to dry the house out is cause trouble in'tbog!
I quite fancy turning the whole acre back to some kind of bog garden, but will that make the "serious settlement" worse (and please the "serious woodworm" and jovial horseflies)
Its also on a steep slope. One end of the house needs digging out a couple of feet, which looks easy enough, though we dont yet know if it has foundations or is built on rock.should the sureveyor have told us? we didnt know that we needed to ask. How do we tell? Its stone built (grey limestone?) 2 storey, aprox 1900
Have you seen the damage a bogburst can do?!
http://ireland.iol.ie/~bmullets/Lanslide/index.html
also a faq for general/common costs would be a wonderful thing for someone to start!(price per sq foot of things like basic walls, floors, drains, comparing materials, diy+pro?) You regulars must all be sick of typing "without details its hard to give an accurate cost..."
I've seen a few posts with price for repointing and plastering and electrics which were really very useful but it takes so much wading.Id start it myself, but im a little shy incase i put up something inaccurate
Thanks for all the work everyone puts into this site. Im learning so much.
