Horsehair/Limewash Fireplace

Hi,

I have just purchased a house in Suffolk, its circa 1320-1340. The fireplace looks to have been finished in horsehair and lime wash. I'm hoping that there is quality brickwork within the fireplace itself and on the outer sides. I guess my questions are,

Do you think I would be able to make this change in regards to grade II listing regulations?
What is the likely hood of their being good quality brick on the inside and outer sides?
Any key things other than that to consider?

Any chance you could post photos of the fireplace? Presumably the fireplace is not 14th C - do you know when it dates from?

My gut feeling is that in a house that old you should be VERY careful in what you do, and do nothing irreversible in a hurry; I hope you have contacted the local Conservation Officer at the council (and that this individual is helpful!).

I'm in Suffolk in a Grade II and very fortunate in my Conservation Officer. He has been most helpful and supportive (once we knew what we were doing and understood the rules). You may be fortunate!
