Homemade Linseed Paint

I havent been on here in a while, been trying to actually get on with all the work that needs doing, but I needed to check a few things so while I was using the search I thought I would mention this.

I had a big wooden gate to paint, and didnt want to spend a fortune on paint, and obviously I didnt want to use modern paint...

So as a compromise I mixed Raw Linseed Oil with cheap powder paint. It was a bit messy to make and use, and the resultant "paint" seemed very thin, but several months on the results look pretty reasonable for about £6 a litre.

I've just picked up a bargain book from the blessed TKMaxx, all about natural paints.
Lots of science, proving the superiority of the natural ones on almost every count, and recipes for all sorts of paints using a wide variety of natural ingredients (lime, casein, egg tempera....).
There's one for linseed paint, using natural pigments rather than powder paint, that sounds very like what you've been doing to your fence.

I suspect (or, rather, hope) that chapters 4 to 6 were included on marketing grounds.

Following a 24-hour visit by daughter and two grandsons, our "Personal Sanctuary" currently looks more as though a personal tsunami has hit it.
