The Landmark Trust is widely known about - and holiday lets in National Trust places too. English Heritage has joined in at certain properties.

However, for anyone seeking a holiday or a short break in the UK (no flying...) can I draw to people's attention The Vivat Trust. Wonderful buildings, and often you can get reductions if you are willing to take a break at short notice.

It's a small organisation which does excellent work in giving a future to historic buildings at risk.

Thanks for that Evelyn. I'm a big fan of the Landmark Trust, and Vivat looks as though they have interesting properties too. I've asked for a brochure.

Nice people too! Office is in Cowcross Street, along with SAVE and many other conservation organisations.

Church Brow in Kirby Lonsdale is beautiful... just beside Ruskin's View. He deemed it the best view anywhere!

We've stayed in four Vivat Trust properties (The Chantry, Coombermere Abbey, The Tower of Halbar and the Cloister House) and they are fantastic.

I can't speak highly enought of them and they are always interesting buildings to boot that are very sympatheticly restored. They are also very well appointed and well run.

In addition they are often cheaper then the equivalent Landmark Trust type of property as well.

Just my 2p.
