Feltwell Towers is such a patchwork of pointing that really the whole place needs doing

I think this may be a job that awaits my having sufficient cash to get someone in to do it. I just won't have the time, it would take me more than a month of Sundays!

Indeedy they are - backing rods are often used as a cost saver, and to simplify the job - it is easier to push the rod in, and that gives you a consistent amount depth to repoint to. They are usually closed cell neoprene, so basically waterproof - no idea about breathability. There is a bit of flex to them though.
