hi all
my front door sits on the original pintle and gudgeon hinge - I think that's what it's called . the door surround is stone and the door is the original ledge and brace. I gave two questions :
1. any suggestions how to insulate around the gaps around the door .
2. can anyone recommend a restorer in the North West that could do repairs to the bottom of the door.

oh - one last question - any idea about dates when these hinges were in use ? mine is set into the stone surround and I can't seem to find any info on their use.

I presume the door is closing against a wooden sub-frame?

Reddiseals and Mightons do all kinds of different seals, just a case of finding what you think will work best. You could machine a groove in the side of the door or frame and fit a compression seal - but this is of course modifying what sounds like a nice old door, so maybe best avoided if you can. Having said that, the groove required is very small indeed - about 3mm wide - which you machine very carefully with a router - and the seal will last a very long time. Unfortunately, most seals come on rolls and you get far more than you need for 1 door.

For a less invasive solution, but probably not as long lasting as eventually the glue gives up, something self-adhesive like this may do the job. I've bought some to seal some outward-opening French doors but not used it yet.

Or look at the "timber acoustic seals" on the Reddideals page, they are self-adhesive and will still help stop draughts.

Both firms will send you samples if you ask them.

Can't help you on North-West joiners I'm afraid, or hinge dates. If you post up some pictures you'll get a better response.

it doesn't have a sub frame. the door just closes against the stone - hence massive gaps . whenever I've asked joiners to quote me in the past , non have been interested :-(
I really want to keep the door , but also need to insulate.

You could try SPAB and see if they have any local contacts for "sympathetic" joiners.

Sealing your door is impossible to say any more on really without seeing it. It may be as simple as adding some self-adhesive compression seals as on the links above, it may be that scribing some timber to your stone frame and adding a strip around the inside with a seal machined into it to butt up against the door face is a better and more permanent option.

On our door, which is also hung on pintles, I used two different thicknesses, as the gap varies around the door.
When you first apply it, it takes some hours to expand fully. After that, just a few seconds. It constantly wants to expand, so it sort of pushes against the door. One has to lean on the door to compress the seal so the latch can be released.
Excellent stuff.

You might need to prime the stone to get adhesion. I'd use Arbo 2650. Or thinned varnish.

Not really the time of year for fiddly repairs to door bottoms. Door might need to be off all day. What needs doing? DIY......

Have you considered a curtain? There are often lots of thick velvet door curtains on ebay which could make a good quick fix til you get round to doing something more permanent.

You may find something like 88v8's suggested product to be effective, but if it's not a complete solution you can always hang a heavy curtain inside the door. Make sure that it brushes the floor and extends a generous distance on each side of the door. The closer to the door it hangs, the more effective it will be.
