Yup - but you can browse and be online without your name appearing. You can do that if you log out too of course.
Thanks, Nemesis. I think I understand the process now, though I still can't imagine why anyone would bother (though people do, I realise - there are usually a couple of 'hiddens' whenever I bother to look). As my Yorkshire father-in-law would say, "There's nowt so queer as folk".

No, there are reasons why people may not wish to appear to be actively browisng when they aren't, simply online, or when they are at work.
Not sure why any site needs to say who is looking at it really, I think that's odd.

So when the boss walks round and says are you reading that page he can see displayed on your screen, you can say, not me Guv, look I'm not logged in.
Or if the Guv logs in to the same site, just by chance and sees Nemesis logged in, he automatically knows it's Mrs EC who's logged in, don't think so.
Doesn't really cut it with me that one, particularly if you are not supposed to use the web at work.
I often use the hidden facility when I'm administering another web forum, as it's handy to be hidden when you are trawling through personal stuff.
Some people just like to be hidden anyway and that's a good enough reason for me.

I can't really see what the point of the 'who is browsing, members, non members, guests ' etc thing is anyhow. Mostly I appear as 'guest' I think as I'm not logged in.
Some people do use their real names though, and maybe don't want the boss/missus/husband to know how much time they waste here!

'I suppose that being a 'Hidden User' helps to disguise the identity of those who may co-incidentally visit similarly related property subject matters on other websites........ hmmm.

All it means is that your site user name doesn't appear at the top of the forum page when browsing, and on the log in page where people are noted as named, hidden or 'guest'.
As the site doesn't remember me mostly I appear as guest, and I suspect many others who are registered browse as guest too, only logging in if they wish to post.
Other 'guests' are those who view without registering.
If the name appears in a different colour, it means it's the admin or mod who is keeping an eye on things - although if they wish they can of course log out and view without names appearing. That way they will appear simply as guest.
No mystery and it's been happening since the site became the type of bulletin board it is. So no being a 'hidden user' isn't anything odd, or sinister, and doesn't disguise anyone posting. It just means it doesn't show your name at the top of this page when you are online, logged in and browsing.
If people wish to register and / browse other bulletin boards they can do so with any log in name they choose. It doesn't have to be the same as this one. Other boards can be viewed without registering or logging in - mostly the internet is open to be read the world over, it's only if you wish to post you need to register a posting name and log in to post.
