Heritage Counts 2007: national and regional reports
Heritage Counts 2007 the annual audit of the historic environment published by English Heritage on behalf of the sector focuses on learning and skills this year. Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive of English Heritage Simon Thurley said that although the data showed those parts of the designated heritage that could be measured were in a better position than in 2002, it masked the true picture which included what is happening to undesignated and local important heritage and conservation areas. 'Skills were' he said 'the key to tackling the main problems currently facing the heritage'. These he listed as dealing with the most difficult buildings at risk, tackling the erosion of the character of conservation areas, then the pressure of housing growth in the South and housing market renewal in parts of the North followed by climate change.
In particular he cited the need for professional heritage skills as essential o the implementation of Heritage Protection Reform. English Heritage with heritage sector partners will, he announced, identify the needs and provide the necessary training to local authority elected members and staff. It will initiate a three year graduate heritage training programme and lastly will progress some of the actions set out in the Inspired! campaign for historic churches, extending the pilot Historic Churches Support Officers scheme. Nine Regional reports have been launched this week in each of the English regions. These can be read and downloaded together with a summary and the full report Heritage Counts 2007 via links from the main website http://www.heritagecounts.org.uk Back
Heritage Counts 2007: the voluntary sector contribution to learning and skills
Every year Heritage Counts identifies the principal trends and challenges facing the historic environment and as above, it focuses this year on learning and skills. But cut backs in the scale of the exercise, undertaken by English Heritage on behalf of the whole sector, mean there is less scope to demonstrate the extraordinarily high levels of activity and commitment in the voluntary heritage sector - Heritage Link’s own constituency.
So, to ensure our contribution is recognised, Heritage Link has launched a webpage as an annexe to Heritage Counts 2007 to showcase the work of Heritage Link member organisations in building capacity and skills development. It also shows how member organisations contribute to education and lifelong learning.
We are grateful to Harriet Buxton, Heritage Link Volunteer and at the time an MA student at UCL, for researching and producing this annexe. Heritage Counts 2007: how Heritage Link's members deliver learning and skills can be found at http://www.heritagelink.org.uk/HCANNEXE07.asp
