I think I've cocked up and desperately need advice. I live in a Grade 11 and have twins of 13 who fight incessantly so have partitioned their very large bedroom with mdf structure. This is only a temporary thing as we are moving house next year. It does not affect the fabric or character. Someone in the house has complained for whatever reason but I am not sure what to do now? Please can anyone advise.

thank you - feel reassured! I have spent a long time renovating the property and love it and value its status as a period property. The person in question is a difficult character and the last owner of the flat had to leave because of a breakdown in relationship. He continually walks round the property finding fault and most of it can be brushed off with a smile, for example no barbecues in the extensive gardens because they smell! and I shouldn't park my car outside my garage. But that comes with living with other people there has to be a mutual respect of privacy etc. anyway thank you again I do appreciate your comments.

Vanessa - has an official complaint been made to the local authority?
Sorry just re-read and realised hadn't answered some of your questions! Am at work. I own my aprtment and have done for three years. He owns another apartment above mine. We are all part of a mangement committee and he is chairman - he spoke to the treasurer (he is in the partment below mine) who was aware already of the partition and he has no problem with me having it.

I think a partition could be said to alter the character if fixed but it's so much swings and roundabouts!
Otherwise if it's just a temporary screen then I can't see a problem.

Vanessa - as Nemesis has said, if this should get the the ears of the local authority, and if he/she should come and inspect, your situation will probably turn on how temporary your partition wall is perceived to be.
Almost certainly the worst that could happen is either:
* you'll be asked to remove it and make good any screw holes, etc.
or
* you'll be told to apply for retrospective consent.
In the case of the latter, just keep in mind that the consent could involve building regs as well as listed building consent. That could mean your having to comply with things like fire regulations, window and ventilation areas, sound insulation, etc.
That's very much a "worst case" scenario, but best to be fore-armed, just in case!

If indeed there is a problem, I'd simply remove the partition asap and replace with screens, made up of the same MDF on some sort of feet, or buy some very cheap wardrobes to place across the room to keep the little b*ggers from killing each other!
