Painting the beams with fire retardant paint - there's timber in every house, do we need to be coating it all with fire retardents :?

My goodness! I'm just watching this horror on the catch up service. Who is this presenter? Everything she says is negative, even the way she holds her eyes and mouth make this nice but a bit clueless couple with the cottage terrified! And oh those damp meters and that gypsum everywhere and the waterproofing and the fire retardant "black" paint on the beams. It makes you want to weep.
At the end of the day if you want a Laura Ashley interior and all mod cons and standards don't buy a cottage! But perhaps I'm just jealous as I'm still living in my house, full of character, many years after I thought I would have had it repaired and decorated. But it looks and feels more like a home you can relax and work in rather than that magazine shoot interior they now have.
I dread to think how it's going to be living in those tiny rooms when the two boys are gangling teenagers. Have me running for the hills.
Oh well. This forum over the years has been great at educating those who wanted to know more than what's easily attainable by the average builder. That programme has just set us all back several decades. Pity she can't be followed around by a real period house conservation expert.
I feel jaded now.

Oh dear! Why do people watch this drivel? Shows like this make no attempt to take a serious look at building rescue/restoration. They just set out to fabricate drama and to get someone to argue or cry - preferably both.
In the interests of balance and fairness, I should add that I didn't (and won't) watch the show. I'm arrogant enough to believe that I know exactly the formula that it followed. So I spent a much more enjoyable evening watching two flies crawling up a window. Now that WAS drama!

I still don't have a TV. I was looking for something to watch whilst eating a sandwich and it caught my eye. It won't again. Horror story - spend loads of money whether it was all necessary or not - interior decorate to Period Living Magazine photo shoot standard. Just nowhere to actually live!

And I would have expected anyone noticing water running down a wall from a chimney area would have actually got up a ladder to inspect the guttering and roof. I mean, you could nearly have got into the darn hole!

No, sadly not. Still on the peripheral, but I've been completely embroiled in theatre, which I do for free and my business, which keeps the roof on and without holes. I have extricated myself from the theatre commitments for a month or so I hope, and by now had intended to have some project in the house on the go, but the business is devouring my time. It seems it was waiting for attention.
I'll get there. There isn't a day goes by that I'm not thankful to live in this lovely, if disheveled, old house. And not a day when I wish I could do something to improve it. I suspect it was ever thus.
What's Restoration Home? Will it be BBC? If so I can catch it on iPlayer.

I was painting and decorating and doing repairs around the area but it wasn't as busy as a full time job. So I was able then to give a lot of time to the theatre I work with. Then I started a business that has become more successful than I thought but it needs 9-10 hour days and I often work weekends. But the theatre still wants me as much if not more. You can see there is a problem. When I realised last night that I've given most of my free time up for free I got a bit sad. I need to cut down what I do for the theatre to concentrate on the business and after that spare time should be for me and my home.
It works in theory. Just getting it into practice that will be hard!

Wasn't that end of terrace the other day really falling down? The one with the shoddy concrete? Surely you'd sue the surveyor who said it was of brick construction?
Bet the truth of the matter is they bought it on the cheap, knew it was a wreck and always planned to do it up. Other wise how come one moment she's crying about how much it will cost to do and the next moment she's spent on £60k on making it into a Barrett home.

I made the mistake of watching the first 15 minutes of this tripe tonight.
On pointing to a large crack in a wall, Ms Beeny declares "We'll need to get the professionals in to look at this, but until then you should expect the worst".
Not trying to scaremonger for the sake of the camera at all then :roll: As it turns out the place did have fairly major structural issues, but she didn't know that at that point.
Repeat to myself 1000 times - "I must not watch rubbish television, especially that containing the enormously-bosomed and seemingly permanently pregnant Sarah Beeny."
