i have to say , this program really annoys me.
whats the odds that they cement up the old lime and rubble walls , damp proof the walls and floor and plasterboard the old ceilings over.
apparently the lime and rubble is localised to brighton as a form of wall building..

Those photos of the general destruction are all very sad but I find the wider landscape photos the most fascinating, especially the first three that clearly show the extend to which the land quite literally slides away. Astonishing really.

thanks Gareth , i shall look it up. that bird on that show though ,your kitchen is a catastrophe ,its the worst case of chronic.... , your house is doomed , your house is terminal etc etc etc , yawn , change the record love!
its only a bit of damp that can easily be sorted , unless of course you get your 'experts' on the job in which case it will need dpc's, dpm's damp proof paints , damp proof screeds , damp proof plasters , damp proof air , damp proof furniture and a bag of damp proof boiled sweets to suck on while waiting for the damp proof kettle to boil so we can all have a nice cup of damp proof tea...

Yes yes yes. Presentation style is somewhat irritating, but they saved a historic building from further destruction due to water ingress by investing £10k on a replacement roof didn't they? Also, there was a human interest story here that many of us can probably relate to. That is the resolve,the back breaking effort and the money that is required to restore listed buildings.Not a bad message for other hairdressers out there looking to 'do up' a listed property.

Yes that is a good way to view the programme.
However I think it is a pity that it is the building that is blamed for all the problems when in fact it is all the stupid, foolish and downright wrong changes that it has been made to suffer and endure.

in all fairness all i saw was them giving that wall a possible death sentence by not allowing all the moisture to evaporate out through it and rather than put the dpm between the wall and the earth they took the easy route and put it between the plaster and the wall, on one side a dpm , on the other an earth bank and in the middle a sodden rubble and lime wall , but thats not the point i was trying to make , my point is that its not all doom and gloom and chronic this and the end of that with restoring an old house and blowing things out of proportion like this will possibly prevent people from buying and restoring old property's , its certainly putting across ideas and methods of how to fix problems that i for one would never dream of doing to an old house.
i believe with damp there is an option to do one of two things , hide it or sort it and i think in this instance they did a very good and probably expensive job at hiding it..

I don't disagree at all.
Apart from the wall being almost demolished by the owner removing the cement previously put on to "stop" the damp, we were forced to watch further cement being skimmed on prior to the wonder... even used on motorway tunnels.... membrane.
total nonsense from start to finish but OH! SO COMMON!

Well, tonight's load of cobblers included:-

"You'll need a new roof in 5 to 6 years time, and that will be £50 to £60k".

Really? Then how come I had a roof done 4 years ago, probably a larger roof and definitely more complicated, for £17k? That was a complete change of roof covering, new plain tiles (as per the house on TV), new skylights, the works.

i liked the floor specialists ''this is the worst out of level floor i have ever seen'' , you wanna come round mine and have a look at my bedroom floor! its like a trampoline and one side of the room is a good foot lower than the other, i wont be putting in steel joists or levelling out the floor.

i also liked when she said about the expanding foam underpinning ''and if you are lucky it will also lift your house back into its original position'' :shock:

its on ch4 + 1 now.

In our bathroom, the handbasin, bath and the loo are all up on blocks because the floor slopes so much. It doesn't seem to be so noticeable in the room below until you look at the shelf above the logburner which then appears to slope. If we lived in a modern executive home I would be worried but I have always felt safe here.
