Hi there, first time poster but have been reading all the great knowledge here for a while.
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about what this stone might be.... I was digging/raking in the side garden today and hit a shallow stone, about an inch below the soil.
Its probably 90x40cm or so (very roughly). At first when I pulled it out I thought it was just a paver... then I thought it might be even be a grave... but its painted red, and perhaps even overpainted white. Hard to tell.
There's a second stone laying flat underneath. I don't want to keep digging without perhaps asking if anyone has any ideas. Especially if anyone thinks it could be a grave i'll just leave it be... but the paint doesn't seem to suggest so to me at least.
The house is approx 1890s where it was one larger house with stables, but split in to two in the 60s. This is about 8m to the side of the front elevation and would have originally been in the middle of the garden before the land was further divided. This is near my boundary on low-lying ground. Theres little else around it except a modern fence.
I was thinking an old cover for something, a pipe or drain perhaps. Could just be some old think pavers that have been painted. The cut-out at the bottom is unusual though.
If anyone has seen something like this before, or has any ideas... i'd be interested. Thanks!
