Hi all, new to the forum and to the site in general.

I don't have a question, I just wanted to say what an awesome resource this is for folks who don't have new builds.

I have a Victorian terraced house which I am trying to look after in a sympathetic manner and this is exactly the type of site I've been looking for. Thanks to the "ventilation vs heat" thread my wife now believes me that I'm not the only person who says a house needs to breathe (she now thinks you're all sad too).

Thanks again and I look forward to asking way too many questions!

And tell the OH that anything which is unable to breathe it is , usually , classified as dead

Nice to read of someone proud of their Viccy terraced house and wanting to do right by it, I think they're a super style of house and we need a new fashion for reinstating wooden sashes, reinventing the front garden, bringing back the encaustic tile, the jolly colour schemes of plums and greens and ochres and blues, and donning the frock-coat and the crinoline. 8)

Chuck, you'll find me a dreadful old purist if you do post on here and you must take me with a large pinch of salt. :wink:

welcome to the forum chuckalicious, you have certainly come to the right place. My house is from the Victorian era too and I am grasping on to every bit of info these lovely PPUKers can give to me
Joce has amazing knowledge of the use of colours fabrics and room dressings.Plasticpidgeon has a Victorian terrace too which he is lovingly restoring he has some fabulous ideas but in turn each and every member has come up with superb knowledge.

so fling open those windows and ask loads of questions and most of all enjoy your beautiful home

Welcome, and as a fellow Victorian house owner (and general fan of Victorian architecture and engineering) it's nice to see a Victorian terrace being sympathetically worked on, so many have been horribly abused. There is a good mix of ages and types of houses on here.

Chuck - had a good laugh when you said your wife thought we are all sad. I too get the same response when I reach for Mrs. T's iPad and get asked if I'm talking with my sad friends on that thing!. Having two people in the same house on the same wavelength can usually be a big advantage when talking about looking after old houses. Mrs. T is slowly coming round to all the sensible advice I tell her that I've picked up on PPUK but what I've learned is not to try and ram it down her throat all in one go. Over time common sense should prevail and hopefully the rewards will become more obvious.

Wow! What a response thanks for all the replies.

I'm not affiliated with any chicken outlets I'm afraid - the name came from a username I chose for a gaming character many moons ago and has stuck.

As for the house, yes, we are trying to get the balance between modern convenience and still looming after the place. It had been poorly cared for by previous owners so we've repointed in lime mortar instead of cement, had the sandstone chimney rebuilt, relaid quarry tiles in the utility etc etc. however, I'm ashamed to admit that we have put in double glazing at the back of the house. To be honest it looks very good from the outside and makes a huge difference inside.

This prompts a thought... plucked a brace of pheasant last night, all those feathers, could they be used as insulation?
Have our chickeneers explored this?

We only have three chooks but between them they have given up enough this molt to make just one pillow. Not sure I have enough years left in me to do the loft!. Our poor Light Sussex looked like an oven ready bird until a few weeks ago but it's all coming back now. Wish the eggs were :roll: .

It has occurred to me when I've lost birds that I ought to make pillows from the feathers ( not enough for insulation as Toby says) but these occurrences have always been so sad that I've never been able to bring myself to do it. As for picking up the feathers from the moult, no way, the chickens get round to eating them all eventually anyway and they use the protein to make new ones.

They did use hens' feathers in days gone by but these days we're all very fussy and like our Hungarian snow goose in bedding. There's no doubt that the warmth and lightness of feathers is an incredibly insulating and cosy design, though in summer my black Orpingtons, who are like huge fluffy clouds, have to bury themselves in the cool earth to cope!

It's not very exciting but it gives you an idea of the floor. We are getting new floors laid in the other rooms so the utility is full of furniture, hence the small floor space in the photo

Absolutely love this floor though.
