Heating question

Not strictly PP, but know there are plenty of experts on here.....

We ran out of oil at the end of last week and consequently the boiler shut down. Several chilly days later, we now have oil again and the boiler is working. However, we have a couple of radiators which refuse to get hot (TRV's are open). I'm guessing it's some sort of airlock? Any suggestions on how to remedy without calling a plumber?

To state the obvious - Have you bled them?

Are the feed and return pipes getting hot?

Are the trv's stuck? I would strip them before calling a plumber

Bled them - yes

On one rad, the return pipe is hot, but the feed is not
On the other, neither feed or return is hot.

Stuck valves, turned off valves, gunk in pipes, failing pump.

TRV vave could be stuck

on most trv valves there is a big knurled nut that holds the head on. undo this (no water should leak if it does you have the wrong nut) and remover the head

in the middle of the valve is a small pin make sure this is free, you should be able to push down on it with the edge of your thumb nail.

do you have a pressurised system? if so double check the pressure gage on the boiler especially if you have been bleeding rads !!

have you tried turning all the other rads off, so the whole of the pump flow will try and dislodge the blockage in the cold rad (one at a time).

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I tried Frank's last piece of advice first (since it seemed the simplest) and turned off all the rads (no mean feat)...This then appears to have resolved whatever problem there was with the 2 problem rads.

The house is slowly warming up again and i've saved a few quid on plumbers.

From what you say your central heating has a section of piping (either return, flow or both)supplying the once cold radiators that traps air.
