Hall Lantern

I am looking for a traditional lantern for the hall of my 1840 townhouse. Ceiling height is about ten foot six and width about five feet. I have seen one I like at Wilkinson's chandelier showroom (it is also on their website), but would like to get some idea of what else might be available. Any suggestions?

Nobody else has replied, so I thought I'd suggest my favourite lighting place. Jim Lawrence has some lovely stuff, including a super hall lantern which I covet, but which would look odd with our lower ceilings! Their service was also excellent, ringing to confirm measurements on some curtain poles we ordered etc. (Where is everyone????)

I think gas is quire likely. We are only a mile or so from King's Cross which boasts the earliest gasometer in the country (if not the world). I have come across quite a few old pipes under the floorboards, but whether they date from the inital construction of the house I cannot say.

Nigel - matter of interest, what was the file size of the pictures you posted? I'm interested to know whether there's a size limit.

I don't think there is a file size limit as the picture is not hosted on this site. BUT, if you post a big image it will fill more than the normal width of the message box. This will cause the message box to widen, perhaps off screen, taking the whole thread with it and everyone then has to use their scroll bar to read the thread. This will not make you popular. Also it's a drag for anyone who doesn't have broadband.

Nigel, is that really an 1840 English design? It looks kind of Morrocan c. 2005.

The second lantern is a bit OTT I agree (but my wife quite liked it). I have been looking for lanterns for a while and not come across one I really like. Here is where it will hang (bare light bulb visible):

Although I like the Soane yellow I dont think it really goes with my Roger Oates runner. I am thinking of replacing the yellow with more of a mushroom colour, possibly a wallpaper with a stone block pattern as was common in late Georgian/early Victorian halls.

Nigel - when/if you find that stone-block wallpaper, will you let us know? I've been wanting it in my front hall ever since we moved in, but never found anything really convincing. The 'stones' were all too small.
The Assembly House here in Norwich was revamped after a fire and had it painted on to a couple of walls. Absolutely brilliant, but difficult to diy well enough.

Stone block Wallpaper

Coles do one in two colours. They are a bit wishy washy for my taste however. I was wondering about applying a glaze on top to darken them up a bit.

It's a really splendid cornice, isn't it?
I notice that you've not painted it. Is that because (like me) you like the way it looks, or because you haven't yet decided what to do with it, or just haven't got round to it yet?

I see what you mean about the Coles paper. Not a very helpful page, is it? I'd have liked to see what it looks like on a wall, to get some idea of the scale.

This cornice was cleaned for me and still needs some more restoration. Cornices can look very good left undecorated but I think I will eventually decorate this one, though not necessarily in white. I will use distemper (home made) when I eventually get round to it.
