We are about to buy a Georgian house near Ipswich in need of lots of TLC, not to mention a new roof, proper central heating to replace storage heaters, replastering, new kitchen and bathrooms, renovation of sash windows etc

We want to do everything as sympathetically as possible, but it is awfully intimidating. Does anyone know a good local expert (architect or surveyor etc or even a book!) to assist? A good roofer would help too-we have been quoted by Scoffield and Lait but have no idea if it is competitive or not! So many decisions,,,

Have a look on the search for expert on PPUK and look for Whitworth Partnership, they are based at Bury St Edmunds. You cannot beat their expertise.

I know nothing about them, but there's an organisation called The Georgian Group who campaign for the conservation of Georgian properties. And they have a book shop. They might be helpful to you.

The Georgian Group is a very good organisation - runs courses and has scholarly publications, gives advice, and is one of our national amenity societies.

The bookshop part of this site has some good publications too - Janet Collings on old house care and repair - but the best thing I can recommend at this point is that you go on a SPAB Homeowners' Weekend.

Unbeatable. Lots of advice about all manner of things, including the use of lime.

And I agree about the Whitworth Co-Partnership!

Hi Iain
Sound t'riffic.
You can do a search on the RIBA website http://www.architecture.com for architects with listed buildings - even specifically Georgian buildings -experience. Don't overlook the separate link to their Architects practicing in Conservation which is a separate listing for real specialists. You can search by geographic location but I think there are only a few in the country.
You could also try talking to the Bursar at Culford School (Near Bury St Edmunds). They have had quite a lot of conservation work done on Culford Hall and I'm sure he'd be happy to recommend their architect. Can't remember his surname but his first name is Mike.
