WE ve just moved in to W Yorks to a house and barn (not listed ) that needs stuff doing. We have realised that we are fairly ignorant about many things and totally ignorant about some. I suspect you guys can help hugely. Q1 The house is 1727 but the barn has a huge lintel. What sort of front door is in keeping with the period and also what style internal doors. the barn will end up being a fairly grand room despite being fairly low and with exposed beams.

A photo or three would really, really help, as "a 1727 house" covers a whole range of possible sizes, social status, etc etc, and the appropriate door or doors (and lots of other fittings and fixtures) are going to depend on a lot more than just the date of construction.

Ideally it would be nice to keep the barn entrance as a " barn entrance" by installing one(ortwo) swinging solid doors as originally intended, complemented by the use of hand made ironmongery.
These doors, whilst operational, to be kept in a permanent open position that leads to a fully double glazed oak mullioned partion, set further back from the original door line, this to incorporate the "proper" front entrance door, also fully double glazed.
With this approach you will preserve the integrity of the original entrance but provide a contemporary and well insulated entrance that addmits lot of light.
AS already suggested, photo,s would be usefull to inspire more ideas

Hello, Victoria. Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new home.
There's certainly lot of good advice to be had here. The first vital thing to crack is posting photo's. A picture is worth a thousand words, as my old physics teacher used to say.
From my own experience I'd recommend taking your time and really getting to know your property before starting on major renovations. Assuming the place is basically habitable then living in it for a year will allow you to experience the changing moods of the house through the seasons, see the way the house interacts with the garden, and experiment with using rooms in different ways. During this discovery phase you can be photographing the house and producing meaured plans, researching renovation techniques, materials, and equipment, and mulling over the potential of the property. Once priorities become clear you can then start work in earnest with a good overall picture of what you want to achieve.
I say all this because I look back on some of the early work I did on my own house and regret that I didn't spend more time learning about the particular needs of older buildings before leaping into action. Of course, I didn't have access to PPUK back then. Now I have no excuse for bodging and fudging.....
