just had a wad and a bun at Greggs in newark,the shop is pre civil war siege and you can eat on the first an second floors in a property that prince Rupert stayed in during the conflict(he probably lived on sausage rolls and booby buns!)attached a pic of the fireplace on the second floor,it is only a phone shot and does not show the patterns carved in thr beams.

There's a lovely wiggly country route, but the problem is it wiggles past my favourite pub and Jacqi's house, so I've never made it solo! But for you, all things are possible.

What on earth do you mean, Joce, by "can't do the A1"? It's a perfectly ordinary dual carriageway - much simpler than twisty country lanes.

I'm sure you're right, but I have panic attacks and become (even more of) a menace. Chris agrees that I shouldn't do dual carriageways or motorways, and very sensibly refuses to give me any lessons on them after a few near death experiences with me screaming and swerving about. Given that my phobia of transport (I'm afraid this extends to planes, tubes and boats) prevented me from learning to drive until 2 years ago, it's a wonder I'm on the roads at all.

Curiously enough I have no fear of cycling, and have spent a lot of time cycling round central London and Paris without any problems at all.

If only someone would convey me in a landau or barouche- so tiresome being born in the late 20th C.

In which case, I think I can speak for our entire little community when I ask you to make a habit of posting a few words of warning here, at least two hours before you venture out in the car.

It'll give us all a chance to head rapidly away from the affected area.

Newark is a short trip (though one that too many of the inhabitants of her town have never made, for fear of falling off the edge of the world). And she has to check how my chimney is doing.

I may be repeating myself but the best two hours learning to drive were the two hours AFTER I passed my test. My driving instructor took me on and off motorways using busy slip roads, we did loads of overtaking on the motorway and generally became accustomed to the speed and style of motorway driving.

For the price of two lessons it was well worth it.
They do "Pass Plus" now and I paid for all my kids tp do it.

I'm sure you're right 'Marm. I'd be too embarrassed to make a fuss in front of a stranger. With Chris I go to pieces and on my own I just turn back. A few hours of paid practice would probably sort me out.

I did something similar with FF jnr after he passed his test; two hours of instruction before we let him loose in his own car. My fingers are still crossed, but it seems to have paid off as he takes himself off around the country most weekends.

Soon after my son passed his test, he managed to roll Mrs P's car on a narrow country lane, while driving much too fast (he confessed some years later!). Fortunately it was a Volvo, and he wasn't even scratched. But the car was so badly damaged that the insurance company wrote it off, and paid out more than we expected. When we enquired about this (bloody fools!) they said that the additional write-off value was because of the car's sunshine roof.

It didn't have a sunshine roof! :shock:
